THE BROAD PRIZE

The Broad Prize is an annual award to honor large school districts that demonstrate the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among low-income and minority students. Broad Prize scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors in the finalist and winning districts who demonstrate a record of academic improvement during their high school careers and who have a financial need.

The Broad Foundation supports the California Charter School Association (CCSA) Legal Defense Fund to ensure that California’s largest school districts comply with providing Proposition 39 facilities to public charter schools.

The Broad Foundation supports Charlotte-Mecklenberg Schools (CMS) in their efforts to improve performance at the teacher, school and district levels. A key element in its transformation has been the creation of a cohesive performance management system to maximize the potential of the district’s human and capital resources. 


CHARTER SCHOOL GROWTH FUND

The Broad Foundation supports the Charter School Growth Fund’s (CSGF) loan pool, which provides facility financing to charter schools. Loans through CSGF are provided at better rates and with faster turnarounds than charters can find on their own. The facilities fund is expected to provide millions of dollars in facilities financing to ventures through the refinancing of loans and the recycling of capital to new lenders over the fund’s 10-year lifetime. CSGF estimates that this fund will create tens of thousands of seats for charter management organizations across the country.

The Broad Foundation supports Chicago Public Schools in its efforts to develop an improved school-based performance management system and a human capital management system. The performance management system will provide real-time student-level information for teachers, principals and area superintendents that will inform decision-making and allow for timely, targeted interventions. The human capital management system will help the district support, attract and retain high-quality teachers, principals and other employees.

The Broad Foundation supports the Denver Public Schools' (DPS) efforts to improve human capital and performance management systems. DPS plans to use these systems to improve talent recruitment, selection and development and improve the quality of instruction throughout the district while setting appropriate performance targets and improving accountability. 


EXCELLENT EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT

Excellent Education Development (ExED) provides below market-rate loans to charter school operators through a combination of New Market Tax Credits from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and grant funds. With The Broad Foundation’s support, five charter schools receive subsidies to be used toward debt service on their facilities.

The Broad Foundation supports the growth in Los Angeles and New Orleans of KIPP public charter schools, universally recognized for their high-quality, rigorous curriculum and for providing an excellent education to underserved students. The foundation also supports the KIPP Foundation’s Fisher Fellows program, one of the most highly competitive charter leadership programs in the country, which trains future leaders to open public charter schools in large urban districts.

The foundation also supported the Recovery School District’s efforts to develop a comprehensive strategy to improve public education for students in New Orleans and across the state.

The Broad Foundation supports Pacific Charter School Development (PSCD), which identifies, acquires and develops facilities that are leased to academically successful charter management organizations. The arrangement provides public charter schools with high-quality, low-cost facility options and reduces the risk to lenders, which in turn encourages facilities financing for more public charter schools.

USI is a charter management organization operating college preparatory schools in New York City, upstate New York and Newark, N.J. The Broad Foundation supports the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) efforts to transform the district into a high-performing organization. Included in the efforts are a fiscal audit to help balance the budget and identify opportunities to increase school-level funding. Additionally, the foundation supports the strategic planning effort to successfully start the school year and build a base for a performance-oriented culture. The foundation also supports the ground-breaking collective bargaining agreement between DCPS and The Washington Teachers Union.
