ALLIANCE FOR COLLEGE-READY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Broad Foundation supports the Alliance for College-Ready Public Schools in their efforts to build a number of high-performing public charter high schools serving thousands of students in Los Angeles over the next few years.
ASPIRE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Broad Foundation supports Aspire Public Schools' plans to expand its network of public charter schools in the Los Angeles area.
THE BROAD PRIZE
The Broad Prize is an annual award to honor large school districts that demonstrate the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among low-income and minority students. Broad Prize scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors in the finalist and winning districts who demonstrate a record of academic improvement during their high school careers and who have a financial need.
CALIFORNIA CHARTER SCHOOL ASSOCIATION AND THE LEGAL DEFENSE FUND
The Broad Foundation supports the California Charter School Association (CCSA) Legal Defense Fund to ensure that California’s largest school districts comply with providing Proposition 39 facilities to public charter schools.
CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Broad Foundation supports Charlotte-Mecklenberg Schools (CMS) in their efforts to improve performance at the teacher, school and district levels. A key element in its transformation has been the creation of a cohesive performance management system to maximize the potential of the district’s human and capital resources.
CHARTER SCHOOL GROWTH FUND
The Broad Foundation supports the Charter School Growth Fund’s (CSGF) loan pool, which provides facility financing to charter schools. Loans through CSGF are provided at better rates and with faster turnarounds than charters can find on their own. The facilities fund is expected to provide millions of dollars in facilities financing to ventures through the refinancing of loans and the recycling of capital to new lenders over the fund’s 10-year lifetime. CSGF estimates that this fund will create tens of thousands of seats for charter management organizations across the country.
CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Broad Foundation supports Chicago Public Schools in its efforts to develop an improved school-based performance management system and a human capital management system. The performance management system will provide real-time student-level information for teachers, principals and area superintendents that will inform decision-making and allow for timely, targeted interventions. The human capital management system will help the district support, attract and retain high-quality teachers, principals and other employees.
DENVER PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Broad Foundation supports the Denver Public Schools' (DPS) efforts to improve human capital and performance management systems. DPS plans to use these systems to improve talent recruitment, selection and development and improve the quality of instruction throughout the district while setting appropriate performance targets and improving accountability.
EXCELLENT EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT
Excellent Education Development (ExED) provides below market-rate loans to charter school operators through a combination of New Market Tax Credits from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and grant funds. With The Broad Foundation’s support, five charter schools receive subsidies to be used toward debt service on their facilities.
FOUNDATION FOR NEWARK'S FUTURE
The Broad Foundation supports Newark Public Schools via the Foundation for Newark's Future. The support provides for a diagnostic assessment of the district during its leadership transition.
GREEN DOT PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Broad Foundation supports Green Dot Public Schools, a nonprofit charter management ogranization operating public charter high schools in the Los Angeles area. The Broad Foundation's support aids in Green Dot's Los Angeles expansion and in the launch of Green Dot’s newest school in New York, in partnership with the United Federation of Teachers.
HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
The Broad Foundation supports the Houston Independent School District's implementation of the nation’s most comprehensive pay for performance program for teachers, administrators and other school-based personnel. The program rewards educators based on their ability to improve student achievement on state proficiency tests.
The Broad Foundation supports the growth in Los Angeles and New Orleans of KIPP public charter schools, universally recognized for their high-quality, rigorous curriculum and for providing an excellent education to underserved students. The foundation also supports the KIPP Foundation’s Fisher Fellows program, one of the most highly competitive charter leadership programs in the country, which trains future leaders to open public charter schools in large urban districts.
The Broad Foundation supports efforts by leading education organizations—New Schools for New Orleans, Teach For America, New Leaders for New Schools and KIPP—to transform public education in New Orleans. These organizations are working in partnership with Louisiana’s Recovery School District to recruit and train high-quality teachers and school leaders and to create new, innovative, high-quality public schools. The foundation also supported the Recovery School District’s efforts to develop a comprehensive strategy to improve public education for students in New Orleans and across the state.
NEW SCHOOLS VENTURE FUND
The Broad Foundation supports the New Schools Venture Fund (NSVF), which invests in the incubation and development of high-quality nonprofit public charter school management organizations in Washington, D.C. and across the country. NSVF aims to accelerate the pace and quality of public charter school growth through the creation of accountable, sustainable schools that provide quality public education opportunities.
The Broad Foundation supports initiatives by the New York City Department of Education and the Fund for Public Schools to transform public education in the city of New York. Initiatives like the school-wide performance bonus and student incentives are helping close the achievement gap.
PACIFIC CHARTER SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT
The Broad Foundation supports Pacific Charter School Development (PSCD), which identifies, acquires and develops facilities that are leased to academically successful charter management organizations. The arrangement provides public charter schools with high-quality, low-cost facility options and reduces the risk to lenders, which in turn encourages facilities financing for more public charter schools.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Broad Foundation supports Prince George’s County Public Schools' (Md.) efforts to develop a performance management system that tracks data, creates coherent accountability standards and creates a clear set of performance standards for all employees in the district.
SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Broad Foundation supports Seattle Public Schools' creation of a district-wide performance management system, which provides parents, educators and central office staff with student performance data and operational information.
STAND UP FOR SACRAMENTO SCHOOLS
The Broad Foundation supports STAND UP for Sacramento Schools’ mission to increase academic achievement and accountability for the five school districts that serve the students of the City of Sacramento. STAND UP supports and develops excellent public schools by focusing on issues of data, human capital and expanded public school choice.
SUCCESS CHARTER NETWORK
The Broad Foundation supports the creation of Success Charter Network (SCN) schools. Based in New York City, SCN schools provide a rigorous curriculum, a longer school day and year, and the appropriate supports so that all students can succeed.
TEACH FOR AMERICA
The Broad Foundation supports Teach For America’s efforts to broaden and deepen its teaching corps and alumni program in large urban school districts across the country. Teach For America corps members teach in dozens of hard to staff schools all around the nation.
The Broad Foundation supports the start-up and scale-up of Uncommon Schools, Inc. (USI) in New York City. USI is a charter management organization operating college preparatory schools in New York City, upstate New York and Newark, N.J. USI has achieved outstanding academic results predicated on its commitment to high standards, data-driven decision making, a structured learning environment, and a longer school day and year.
WASHINGTON, D.C. PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Broad Foundation supports the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) efforts to transform the district into a high-performing organization. Included in the efforts are a fiscal audit to help balance the budget and identify opportunities to increase school-level funding. Additionally, the foundation supports the strategic planning effort to successfully start the school year and build a base for a performance-oriented culture. The foundation also supports the ground-breaking collective bargaining agreement between DCPS and The Washington Teachers Union.
